Being called to holiness can sound overwhelming at first. You might hear the word holy and immediately think of perfection or impossible standards. But Peter reminds us that being called to holiness is really about belonging to God and learning to reflect His character in everyday life.

Families are shaped by what they follow. Every day, the world gives us messages about what matters most. It tells us to chase comfort, success, and approval. It tells us our worth is tied to the size of our house, how well our kids perform, and whether the right people think well of us. If we are not careful, we can begin to follow those patterns without even realizing it.

Peter reminds believers that following Jesus means living differently.

Bible Focus

1 Peter 1:14-16 (ESV) – “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’”

Devotional Thoughts

Holiness Begins with a Relationship

Peter begins by calling believers obedient children. This reminds us that holiness begins with a relationship with God the Father through Jesus. We are not trying to earn God’s love by behaving. We obey because we already belong to Him and are loved. Through Jesus, we have been welcomed into God’s family, and now we are called to reflect His character. That same dynamic is true in your home. Your kids do not obey you to earn your love. They obey because they belong to your family. Holiness works the same way.

What Holiness Looks Like in Your Home

Peter warns us not to be conformed to the passions of our former ignorance. Before knowing Christ, people naturally follow their own desires and the patterns of the world around them. You may have watched your own priorities and desires shift after coming to faith. That is exactly what Peter is describing. When Jesus saves us, He begins changing us, giving us new desires and teaching us to live in a new way.

This is why Peter says, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

Holiness means being set apart for God, and it shows up in how we speak to each other at the dinner table, how we respond when our kids push back, how we make decisions under pressure, and how we handle the hard days.

Grace for the Struggle

This does not mean perfection. We don’t stop sinning after we encounter Jesus. We will still mess up and need God’s grace every day. But as we follow Jesus, He continues shaping us to become more like Him. Our children are learning what holiness looks like by watching us. When they see us confess sin, ask forgiveness, and choose obedience even when it is hard, they begin to understand what it means to belong to God.

Holiness is not about trying to look impressive. It is about living as people who belong to a holy God.

Family Questions

What does it mean to be holy?

Why do you think God calls us His children?

What are some things the world tells us are most important?

How does following Jesus change the way we live?

What is one way our family can reflect God’s character this week?

Family Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, we know that you are holy. Thank You for calling us to belong to You. Help our family live differently from the world around us. Teach us to obey Your Word and reflect Your character in the way we think, speak, and live. Make us more like Jesus each day. Amen.

This Week’s Challenge

Holiness does not only happen in church or during family devotions. It happens in the ordinary moments, the argument in the car, the temptation to cut corners, the choice between kindness and frustration.

This week, when your family faces one of those moments, pause and ask:

“Does this reflect God’s character?”

Talk through it together. If the answer is no, pray right there. Ask God to help your family choose what honors Him, and then watch how He shows up in the small stuff.
