Background
1 Peter is a letter written by the apostle Peter to Christians who were scattered and facing real pressure because of their faith. Many of them were living in places where following Jesus made life more difficult, misunderstood, or even uncomfortable.
Peter writes to encourage them in the middle of that struggle. He reminds them who they are in Christ and what God has done for them. He points them back to hope, holiness, and endurance in everyday life.
While Peter originally wrote to them, these same truths speak to us today. We are also called to follow Jesus in a world that doesn’t always share our faith or values. This letter helps us remember that we belong to God, we have a living hope, and we are called to live differently because of Him.
Bible Focus
1 Peter 1:1-2 – “Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for spinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.”
Devotional Thoughts
In these opening verses, Peter reminds believers that we are chosen by God. That means our identity isn’t based on what others think about us or even how we feel about ourselves. We belong to Him.
In a way, we are like strangers in a strange world. We live here, but we don’t fully fit in because our true home is with God. God didn’t choose us randomly. He chose us with purpose—to grow them, shape them, and help them follow Jesus.
Even when life feels confusing or difficult, we can be confident that we are God’s people, loved and set apart by Him.
