Respect is one of those values that can shape every part of family life. It’s more than just saying “yes, mom” or “yes, dad” when they ask you to do something. It’s about showing honor and kindness to the people God has placed in our lives. Kids learn what respect looks like when they practice it with parents at home, with siblings during play, and with grandparents who’ve walked ahead of them in faith. They can carry that same heart of respect to school with teachers, to church with Sunday School leaders, and even into the neighborhood with friends and neighbors.
Respect matters because it reflects God’s heart. When we honor others, we’re showing that we understand their value as people made in His image. These five Bible verses will provide your family with a strong foundation for demonstrating respect in everyday moments.
Teaching Respect: 5 Bible Verses for Families
1. Exodus 20:12 – Honor Your Parents
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
Family Challenge: This week, each child can choose one way to show extra respect to mom or dad (helping without being asked, speaking kindly, or listening the first time). Parents, notice and encourage these moments of honor.
2. Leviticus 19:32 – Respect Those God Has Placed in Your Life
“You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.”
Family Challenge: Think of a grandparent, older neighbor, or church member you can honor. Write them a card, call them, or do something kind that shows respect and appreciation.
3. Proverbs 15:33 – Respect the Lord First
“The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.”
Family Challenge: Talk about one way each person can practice humility at home this week (like letting a sibling go first, or saying sorry quickly). At the end of the week, share how it went.
4. Romans 12:10 – Love One Another
“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”
Family Challenge: Make it fun! Have a “Respect Challenge” day where everyone tries to “outdo” each other in kindness and honor—using encouraging words, helping hands, and cheerful attitudes. See who comes up with the most creative way to show honor!
5. 1 Peter 2:17 – Show Honor to Others
“Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”
Family Challenge: This week, practice showing respect to someone outside your family: maybe a teacher, Sunday School leader, or neighbor. Afterward, talk as a family about how it felt to show God’s love through respect.
How to Use This List with Your Family
These five verses are great to read through with your family, but they’re also meant to start meaningful conversations and deepen your family’s faith connection. Here are a few easy and creative ways to use them:
After-School Devotional – Set aside 10 minutes after school or before bed to focus on one verse per day. Read it, ask a quick discussion question, and pray together about applying it the next day at school, work, or home.
Weekly Family Check-In – Pick one verse per week to focus on as a family. Revisit it throughout the week (at the dinner table, in the car, or during homework time) and share stories of how respect showed up in daily life.
Make It Practical – After reading a verse, challenge each family member to put it into action—whether it’s respecting a teacher, being patient with a sibling, or showing kindness to a classmate. Celebrate together when you see it lived out.
Bring It into Fall Traditions – Use these verses around natural fall moments—talking about one during a family walk under the changing leaves, at a soccer game, or even while carving pumpkins. God’s Word connects to every season.
