As many families prepare for the school year or have already stepped into it, I thought a short, one-week devotional on the theme of “Back to School” would be helpful. A new school year always brings a mix of emotions for both parents and kids. Over the years, as I’ve walked through these seasons with my wife and children, I’ve learned that it’s okay to feel more than one thing at the same time.

I can be excited to see them grow and sad to watch them head off to school each day.

Kids might be excited to see friends and learn new things, but also nervous about new teachers or changes in their routines.

Change can stir up all kinds of feelings—but in the midst of it, Psalm 121:1+2 reminds us that we don’t have to face these feelings alone. God, the Maker of heaven and earth, is our help every step of the way.

Question to consider: What mixed emotions are you and your kids feeling as this new school year begins?

Let’s Study the Bible Together: For Parents

Read our Bible Passage: Psalm 121:1+2 “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Big Idea: As a new school year begins, we can remember that God will help us through every opportunity and challenge that comes our way.

Psalm 121 is a “song of ascent” that God’s people sang as they traveled to Jerusalem. The hills they traveled were full of dangers, but this powerful Psalm reminded them that their help came from the Lord, not from the mountains or from their own strength.

At the beginning of a school year, both parents and kids need to hear this reminder.

As families, we face challenges too—such as transitions, fears, and pressures. This Psalm gives us a promise that the same God who created everything is the one who will help us through whatever we face. Encourage your kids to see school not just as a challenge, but as a place where God provides opportunities to learn and grow under his guidance.

Family Study Guide: Trusting God As Our Helper

Opening Prayer: “Lord, thank You for being our helper in every season of life. As we begin a new school year, remind us that You are with us in the classroom, on the playground, and at home. Give us courage, wisdom, and joy as we trust in You. Amen.”

Read our Bible Passage: Psalm 121:1+2 “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Family Life Application

Back-to-School Prayer Walk – Take a short walk together as a family and use it as a time to pray for the new school year. As you walk, pause in different spots—your yard, the driveway, or along the street- and pray for courage, friendships, safety, and joy for each child. You can take turns praying out loud or silently, and remind each other that God is with you everywhere you go.
