Hey disciple-making parents! April is a great month to slow down and talk with your kids about one of the most important things we can do as a family — pray. It’s easy for prayer to feel like a routine, but Jesus had something much deeper in mind. This month’s discussion is built around the moment the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, and what He showed them. I hope this leads to some important conversation in your home.

Bible Focus

Luke 11:1–4 (ESV)“Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.’ And he said to them, ‘When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.’”

Devotional Thoughts

The disciples had watched Jesus pray to His Father. Something about the way He prayed made them want that too. So they asked Him to teach them, and Jesus did just that.

Jesus gave them a simple pattern. He started with God’s name and His kingdom, not with a list of personal requests. Then He moved to daily needs, forgiveness, and protection. It wasn’t a magic formula, but a window into what prayer is really about — talking honestly with a Father who listens.

That same prayer is for your family today. When we pray together, we’re doing what the disciples did. We’re coming to God as our Father, trusting that He hears us and that what He wants matters more than what we want.

Discussion Questions

Why do you think the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray?

What does it tell us about prayer that Jesus started with God’s name and kingdom instead of our own needs?

What does it mean to ask God to forgive us — and to forgive others?

Is there something you find hard about praying out loud or knowing what to say?

What would it look like for our family to make prayer a real part of our everyday life?

Try This

As a family, try writing your own simple prayer using Jesus’ pattern as a guide. Start with something that honors God, then move to what your family needs, then forgiveness, then protection. Keep it short — then pray it together. You might be surprised how much it helps to have a structure to follow.

Family Prayer

Father, thank You for hearing us when we pray. Teach our family to come to You honestly and often. Help us to trust that You are listening, that You care, and that Your kingdom is what matters most. Amen
