Jesus Died in Our Place
THE EASTER STORY IN THREE PARTS • PART 2 OF 3
Introduction
We can talk about Easter morning, the empty tomb, the joy of Sunday. And we should. But none of it means anything without Friday. The cross is where everything happened, and Romans 5:8 tells us exactly what that was. This week, sit with your family and read it slowly.
Bible Verse
Family Devotional
Notice what this verse doesn’t say. Christ didn’t die for us after we cleaned ourselves up. He didn’t die for us once we were good enough. He died for us while we were still sinners, at our worst, not our best.
That means Jesus didn’t wait for us to get our lives together. He loved us right in the middle of our sin.
Jesus didn’t die because He deserved it. He died because we did. He took our place and bore the punishment our sin required so that we could be forgiven and brought back to God. That’s substitutionary atonement, and it’s the whole reason the cross matters.
This is what makes the cross an act of love, not just a sad story. God did not look at a broken world and react. He planned this rescue before the foundation of the world and carried it out through His Son. The cross was the price of our freedom, and Jesus paid it willingly because He loves us.
Discussion Questions
This verse says Jesus died for us while we were still sinners. What do you think that means? Does it surprise you that He didn’t wait for us to be good first?
Has anyone ever taken the blame for something you did wrong? How did that make you feel toward that person?
Why do you think God chose to send Jesus to die for us instead of just forgiving us a different way?
Knowing that Jesus died in our place, what is one thing you could do differently this week to show Him you are thankful?
This Week As A Family
Memory Verse: Add Romans 5:8 to last week’s sticky note. Can your family say both verses back to back?
Pray Together: “Jesus, thank You for dying in our place. Help us never take the cross for granted. Help us to live like people who have been forgiven. Amen.”
Activity: Ask each person to write down one thing they’ve done wrong this week on a piece of paper. Then tear them up together and talk about what it means that Jesus took the punishment for all of it.
Next week: He Actually Rose • 1 Peter 1:3
