Whether you’re starting a new school year or simply looking for a fresh spiritual reset, God’s Word meets our families right where we are.

A new school year comes with so many feelings for both parents and kids. One of the things I learned from watching Daniel the Tiger with my boys over the years is that it’s okay to have two feelings at the same time. I can be happy that my kids are growing up and sad that they are going to be away for the school day. The kids might be excited for the new school year and scared that their friend group could look different. Change brings mixed emotions for all of us!

The good news is that God never changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His love is steady and strong. And He promises to be with us wherever we go. I hope that this list of 5 Bible verses will give your family the confidence to start the school year strong!

Start the School Year Strong with These 5 Bible Verses for Kids

1. Psalm 56:3 — Put your Trust in God

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

Back-to-School Challenge: When you feel nervous about something today, pause, take a deep breath, and whisper this verse to yourself.

2. Proverbs 3:5–6 — Acknowledge God in Every Circumstance

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all of your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Back-to-School Challenge: Before you begin your school day, pray, “God, I trust You with my day,” and think about one way you can follow Him.

3. Colossians 3:23 — Work Hard For the Lord

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”

Back-to-School Challenge: Pick one assignment today and give it your very best effort as if you were turning it in to God.

4. James 1:5 — Ask God for Wisdom

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

Back-to-School Challenge: If you’re stuck on a problem, pray quietly, “Lord, please give me wisdom,” before trying again.

5. Philippians 4:6–7 — Bring Everything to God in Prayer

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Back-to-School Challenge: If you feel stressed, close your eyes for 10 seconds, talk to God about it, and thank Him for being with you.

How to Use This List with Your Family

These five verses are great to read through with your family, but they’re also meant to start meaningful conversations and deepen your family’s faith connection. Here are a few easy and creative ways to use them:

Do a One-Night Overview – Read through the entire list in one sitting to get the big picture of how Scripture encourages family love and unity. You can let each family member pick their favorite and why it stood out.

Make it a 5-Day Devotional Plan – Focus on one verse per night for 5 days. Read the verse, use the discussion starter, and end with a family prayer time. This creates a simple Bible discussion time without being overwhelming.

Summer Family Devotion Series – Use this list during summer break as a casual devotion plan–maybe after dinner or before bedtime. Keep it light, and let kids take turns reading the verse or leading the prayer.

Take it on Vacation – Choose one verse to talk about each day–whether you’re in the car, at the beach, hiking in the woods, or winding down at the end of the day. This keeps your family’s discipleship efforts going even on vacation!
