Trailhead – Edition #12 – June 2026
Welcome back, fellow disciple-making parents!
Last month, we considered the omniscience of God. He knows everything, including exactly what your child needs, and that is a good place to parent from. This month we move to a truth that is closely connected but distinct in its own right: God is wise.
Knowing everything is one thing. Always doing the right thing with that knowledge is another. God does both because he is perfectly wise.
God Is Wise
As we consider the wisdom of God, read and reflect on these words from Romans 11:33 (ESV):
“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!”
Paul is not writing about simple things. He has just spent eleven chapters wrestling with some of the most difficult theological realities in all of Scripture. And at the end of it, he lands on worship. Because when we catch even a glimpse of how God works, the only right response is awe.
God’s wisdom is not like ours. We make the best decisions we can with the information we have and hope for the best. God acts with perfect knowledge of every outcome, every heart, and every consequence. He does not make mistakes. He does not look back and wish He had done something differently. His ways are not just better than ours. They are beyond ours.
This is especially important for parents to understand because parenting is full of moments when we cannot see how things will turn out. We make a decision and wonder if it was the right one. We watch our child walk through something hard and cannot understand why. We pray for something specific, and the answer does not come the way we expected.
In those moments, the wisdom of God is not a theological abstraction. It is an anchor. He sees what we cannot see. He knows what we cannot know. And He is working in ways that are, as Paul says, beyond tracing out.
Reflections for Disciple-Making Parents
One of the most powerful things we can model for our children is trusting God’s wisdom when we do not understand His ways. When our kids see us trust God in the middle of uncertainty, we give them something no curriculum can teach. We give them a picture of real faith. Faith that does not wait for explanation before it trusts.
Teaching our children that God is wise also frees them from the pressure of having to figure everything out on their own. They can bring their confusion, their hard questions, and their unanswered prayers to a God whose wisdom is deeper than any of it.
Life Application
- Read Romans 11:33-36 together as a family and talk about what it means that God’s ways are beyond tracing out.
- Share with your children about a time when God’s plan turned out to be wiser than what you had hoped or expected.
- Identify one situation in your family right now where you need to choose to trust God’s wisdom over your own understanding, and pray about it together.
Book of the Month
Knowing God by J.I. Packer
If you have never read this book, June is a good time to start. Widely considered one of the most important Christian books of the last century, Knowing God walks readers through the character and attributes of God in a way that is theologically rich but accessible for everyday believers. It will deepen your understanding of God’s wisdom and so much more. This one is for you as a parent, not a family read-aloud, but the more deeply you know God, the more naturally that knowledge will flow into the way you lead your family.
Take the Next Step
If you are looking for a simple and meaningful way to keep your family anchored in Scripture this summer, A Summer in Philippians is exactly what you need. It is an 8-week family devotional designed to fit the rhythm of summer, short enough to actually happen and substantive enough to make a real impact. There is no better time to start than right now. Head over to the Family Discipleship Shop to grab your copy and make this the summer your family goes deeper together.
Closing Encouragement
As you begin this month, remember that you do not have to understand everything to trust the One who does. God is wise. His ways are higher than ours, His plans are better than ours, and His vision for your family stretches further than anything you can see from where you are standing right now. When parenting feels uncertain, when the path ahead is unclear, when you cannot make sense of what God is doing, take heart. You are not following a God who is figuring it out as He goes. You are following a God whose wisdom has no limit. Rest in that this month, and lead your family from that place of trust.
