Trailhead – Edition #6 – December 2025
Hello, Friends! Welcome to the December edition of The Trailhead, a devotional designed to help you begin each month with focus, encouragement, and intention. Just as a trailhead marks the start of a journey, The Trailhead is here to reorient your heart for the weeks ahead—a season filled with joy, challenges, and opportunities to lead your family closer to Jesus.
As I’m sure you’re already experiencing, December often brings a mix of wonder and pressure, joy and busyness, celebration and stress. As parents, we feel it all deeply. But this month, I want to pause with you and consider a truth that cuts through the noise:
God is our Provider.
Not just in the sense that He gives us what we need, but that His very heart is inclined toward caring for His children.
Quick Update
If you’ve been with us since September, you know that The Trailhead is walking through 12 aspects of God’s character. Each month, we’ll pause to remember who God is and how that shapes our parenting. Last month, we looked at God’s goodness. This month, we’ll focus on God as our Provider.
God is Our Provider
Philippians 4:19 (ESV)
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
When Paul wrote these words, he wasn’t referring to wishful thinking or a promise of prosperity. He was describing the character of a God who meets His people with abundant, intentional care.
It’s easy for parents to slip into the belief that we are the ultimate providers: for our home, our kids’ stability, their emotional health, their opportunities, even their spiritual growth.
But Paul’s reminder reframes everything: God Himself is the Provider, and we are the stewards.
I don’t know about you, but that brings me great comfort!
Think about the ways God has provided for your family over the past year: moments where a need was met just in time, a prayer was answered quietly, a door opened unexpectedly. In each of those moments, God wasn’t simply supplying something; He was shaping your trust.
And He’s shaping your children’s trust, too.
In a season filled with seemingly never-ending activities, school programs, Amazon shopping carts, and expectations, this verse re-centers us on something more lasting and life-giving: God is the One who provides every good thing.
Reflections for Disciple-Making Parents
Teaching our children about God as our Provider begins with how we live out our trust in our daily rhythms. Kids notice when we pray before making decisions, when we thank God for answered prayer, and when we choose peace over worry. They learn that God isn’t just the One who gives us what we want. He is the faithful Father who meets every true need in His perfect timing.
Life Application
Try choosing one of these simple practices this month:
Create a Provision List
Put a piece of paper on the fridge. Each time God provides something, big or small, write it down. Read the list on Christmas Eve.
Pray before decisions
Before you buy a gift, commit to an event, or take on something new, pray together: Lord, provide what we need — wisdom, patience, clarity, or resources.
Practice gratitude at the table
Once a week, ask: What did God provide for you this week? Let your kids hear provision in others’ stories.
Give intentionally and generously
Find a ministry or person to bless this month. Explain to your kids that we give because God generously gives to us.
Bible Study for December
Throughout December, we are continuing our family Bible study through Ephesians on Discipleship Cliff. Ephesians shows us a faithful God who redeems His people, builds His church, and gives us a new identity in Christ. I’d love for you to walk through this study with your family as another way to see God’s faithfulness on display. Be on the lookout (sometime between Christmas and New Year’s Day) for an announcement revealing our next Bible Study Series for Families.
Book Recommendation
The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer
A classic exploration of God’s character that deepens your understanding of His care, wisdom, and goodness, all of which undergird His provision for our lives and families. This book helps parents see why God is trustworthy in every circumstance.
Looking Ahead
As we wrap up Christmas celebrations and look ahead to the New Year, next month’s Trailhead will focus on God’s Sovereignty, a fitting theme for January. We’ll reflect on God’s vast wisdom and His loving care as He orchestrates our lives. This study will invite us to trust Jesus more deeply as we step into another year of walking with Him and leading our families.
Closing Encouragement
Parents, God sees every need you carry, whether financial, emotional, relational, or spiritual, and He provides not reluctantly but from His abundance. Trust Him, rest in Him, and help your children see that God is not just the giver of things but the Giver of all good things.
