Trailhead – Edition #11 – May 2026

Welcome back, fellow disciple-making parents!

Last month, we thought about God’s mercy. His mercies are new every morning, and that is a good place to parent from. This month, we move to a truth that has the power to quiet some of the deepest anxieties of parenting.

God is omniscient. That simply means He knows everything. And that includes exactly what your child needs.

God is Omniscient

As we consider the omniscience of God, read and reflect on these words from Psalm 139:1-4 (ESV):

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.”

There are no what-ifs with God. There is no fumbling in the dark. He does not guess. He does not wonder. He does not piece things together after the fact. He knows. Completely. Perfectly. Before a word is even spoken.

That is a remarkable truth on its own. But for parents, it carries a specific kind of weight. Because one of the most disorienting parts of parenting is the feeling that you do not have enough information. You cannot fully see what is happening inside your child’s mind and heart. You cannot always tell what they need in a given moment. You second-guess your decisions, wonder if you are missing something, and sometimes even lie awake asking whether you are getting this right.

God is very different. He knows your child more completely than you ever will. He knows what is happening beneath the surface of their behavior. He knows the fear behind the anger and the question behind the silence. Nothing about your child is hidden from Him.

And here is what makes that truth more than just impressive: the God who knows everything is also the God who is personally and lovingly involved. His omniscience is not cold or distant. It is the knowledge of a Father who sees and cares deeply.

Reflections for Disciple-Making Parents

Parenting requires us to make decisions with incomplete information every single day. We do our best, we pray, we lean on wisdom from others, and we still sometimes feel like we are guessing. That is humbling. But it is also an invitation.

When we reach the edge of what we know about our child, we are not standing at the edge of what God knows. He sees everything we cannot see. He understands everything we cannot understand. And He is not indifferent to it.

This does not mean we stop seeking wisdom or paying close attention to our kids. It means we hold our parenting with open hands, trusting that the One who knows everything is also the One who loves our children more than we do. That is a good place to parent from.

Teaching our kids that God is omniscient is also one of the most comforting things we can give them. When they feel unseen, unknown, or misunderstood, they can bring that to a God who knows them completely and loves them anyway.

Life Application

  1. Pray together as a family this month, thanking God that He knows and sees each of you completely.
  2. Talk with your children about what it means that God is omniscient. He knows their thoughts, fears, and needs before they even say them out loud.
  3. Identify one area where you are feeling anxious or uncertain about your child and intentionally bring it to God in prayer this month, trusting that He sees what you cannot.

Book of the Month

Parenting with Hope by Melissa Kruger

This encouraging book reminds parents that our ultimate goal is not to raise perfect children but to point them to a God who knows and loves them perfectly. Kruger writes with honesty and warmth for parents who feel the weight of raising kids in a complicated world. A helpful read for anyone who needs a reminder that God is not surprised by what is happening in your family right now.

Take the Next Step

If you are looking for a simple and meaningful way to keep your family anchored in Scripture this month, I recently launched a brand new five minute family devotional series in 1 Peter. It is short, practical, and designed for real family life. Whether you have young kids or older ones, this series gives you an easy and accessible way to open the Bible together and have a genuine conversation about faith at home. Check out the first devotional in the series and get started this week.

Closing Encouragement

As you begin this month, remember that you do not have to have all the answers to be a faithful parent. God is omniscient. He knows what you do not know. He sees what you cannot see. He understands your child at a depth that no parent can fully reach on their own. That is not a reason for passivity. It is a reason for peace. Bring your uncertainty to Him this month. Lead your family from a place of trust rather than anxiety. And rest in the truth that the God who knows everything is also the God who is working in your child’s heart, even when you cannot see it.
