I’m not sure about you, but I’m always looking for thoughtful questions to spark a discussion with my kids. That’s why I put together this parent-driven discussion on prayer basics — a simple set of prompts to help your family talk about one of the most important habits in the Christian life. A good discussion helps you connect as a family, discover what’s important to each person, and lead your kids toward the truth in their discipleship journey. Use these prompts during family devotions, around the dinner table, or any time you gather together.

Parent-Driven Discussion – PRAYER BASICS

Read Philippians 4:6 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

Prayer is one of God’s greatest gifts to your family. He doesn’t just tolerate our worries; He invites us to bring them to Him. Philippians 4:6 reminds us that nothing is too small or too big to pray about. Every fear, every need, every moment of gratitude belongs in conversation with God.

One of the most powerful things you can do as a parent is let your kids see you pray. When they watch you bring real life to God honestly, they learn that prayer isn’t just a bedtime routine. It’s a relationship. It’s how we stay connected to the One who holds everything together.

When families pray together, they’re not just practicing a good habit. They’re learning to trust God with the real stuff of life. Use these questions to open that conversation at home.

  1. What is one thing you want to thank God for today?
  2. Who is someone we can pray for this week?
  3. How does it feel knowing that you can talk to God whenever you want?
  4. Is there something you’ve been worried about that you could bring to God in prayer?
