Let’s Study the Bible Together
Opening Prayer: Dear Jesus, we thank you for being so great and loving us so much. Help us to learn more about you in our Bible study today and follow you in obedience as we look to be rooted in you. We love you Lord. Amen.
Read Colossians 2:6+7 “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”
Paul had a strong desire to see the Colossian Church grow. He wanted more people to come to know Jesus because he knew how life-changing that encounter had been for him. But it wasn’t as much about growing in numbers as it was about growing in their knowledge and love for Jesus. Paul wanted the Colossian church to become rooted in Jesus. He knew that Jesus was all that the people needed. Paul also knew that there were false teachers spending time with the people who appeared full of wisdom, but were not followers of Jesus. Those false teachers wanted the people to think that Jesus wasn’t quite enough.
Not enough to forgive them of their sins, and not enough to help them grow in their relationship with God. Not enough to endure difficult times.
Just not enough.
Paul knew that the Gospel, where Jesus came on a rescue mission to die for their sin and rise again for their new life, was THE thing that mattered most of all in this life. And Paul is going to use the verses we study today to encourage us, right here and right now, to also make Jesus the most important thing and grow in spiritual maturity. Let’s discuss these important verses right now!
Discussion Questions
What does it mean to receive Christ Jesus the Lord? The people came into a living relationship with God when they came to believe, by faith, that Jesus Christ was Lord. When we call Jesus Lord, we are admitting that Jesus is in charge of everything. He is the boss.
What do you think it might mean to walk in him? At this point in the letter, Paul is focusing-in on the importance of spiritual growth. Guide your kids to understand what it looks like to have a moment-by-moment walk with Jesus through.
Note for Parents: Read through the three ways that we “walk in him” in the section below. Read it over, think about it, and explain it to your kids in a way that is understandable and interesting to them. Make it work for your family 🙂
Three pictures of what it looks like to walk in Christ:
- Rooted – Evokes the image of a tree with deep roots. We are rooted in the work that Jesus has already completed, not in our strong feelings or good works.
- Built Up – Brings to mind a house that is under construction. A follower of Jesus is in the process of growing stronger in their knowledge of and living for Him.
- And established in the faith – The followers of Jesus are becoming stronger in their grasp and understanding of their faith.
Which word picture do you like the most (rooted, built-up, established)? Tell us why!
Why should we be so thankful to Jesus?
Family Life Application
In today’s Bible Study, we talked about how important it is to walk with Christ every single day. Have each person in the family come up with one way to be obedient to Jesus in the coming week. Write them down and start a conversation about it throughout the week!
