The Bible is more than just a book. It’s actually a collection of 66 books. But the bigger reason it’s more than just a book is because the author is God, the creator and sustainer of all that exists. He is the author of life and our redeemer. And he chose to speak to us through the Bible, our guide to real truth, wisdom, and life.

God’s Word teaches us who He is, who we are, and how to walk in His ways. As parents, one of the most important things we can do is help our kids see the Bible for what it truly is: living, active, trustworthy, and powerful. These five verses are a great starting point for showing your children just how important Scripture is for their everyday lives and their walk with God.

5 Bible Verses About the Importance of God’s Word

The Bible Guides Us – Psalm 119:105

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

The Bible is God’s Word to Us – 2 Timothy 3:16+17

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

The Bible is Powerful to Shape Us – Hebrews 4:12a

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.”

The Bible Should Be A Big Part of Our Lives – Joshua 1:8

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

The Bible Calls for Our Attention and Obedience – James 1:22

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

How to Use This List with Your Family

These five verses are great to read through with your family, but they’re also meant to start meaningful conversations and deepen your family’s faith connection. Here are a few easy and creative ways to use them:

Do a One-Night Overview – Read through the entire list in one sitting to get the big picture of how Scripture encourages family love and unity. You can let each family member pick their favorite and why it stood out.

Make it a 5-Day Devotional Plan – Focus on one verse per night for 5 days. Read the verse, use the discussion starter, and end with a family prayer time. This creates a simple Bible discussion time without being overwhelming.

Summer Family Devotion Series – Use this list during summer break as a casual devotion plan–maybe after dinner or before bedtime. Keep it light, and let kids take turns reading the verse or leading the prayer.

Take it on Vacation – Choose one verse to talk about each day–whether you’re in the car, at the beach, hiking in the woods, or winding down at the end of the day. This keeps your family’s discipleship efforts going even on vacation!
