Issue #2 – Loving What God Loves
Good morning, fellow disciple-making parents! Welcome to the second issue of The Trailhead, a weekly devotional designed to help you start each Monday focused on Jesus. Like a trailhead marks the beginning of a journey, The Trailhead devotional exists to reorient your hearts as a new week begins—a week mixed with joy, challenges, and opportunities to lead your family towards Jesus.
Let’s begin by taking a closer look at Psalms 37:4.
“Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
Delight yourself in the LORD
Mondays are full of possibility. If you’re anything like me, your mind is already buzzing with to-do lists, deadlines, and the daily mission of keeping your kids alive. Will this be the day I crush all my work goals? Will this be the week my kids finally recognize all of the sacrifices my wife and I have made? Or maybe–just maybe–they’ll tell all their friends that I’m the funniest person they’ve ever met?
Chances are, none of those things will happen, but I still love the feeling of possibility.
But as we step into a new week, I’m reminded that the most important possibility isn’t about productivity or recognition. It’s about something more profound: the possibility that my heart might start loving what God loves.
Learning to Love What God Loves
This verse isn’t a promise that God is going to give us whatever we want or desire. It’s a call to transformation. Delighting yourself in the Lord involves an increased hunger to spend quality time with Him as you study the Bible and seek His face in prayer. This might not happen overnight. It will likely require a commitment to practice these spiritual disciplines over time. But it’s worth it!
When our delight is in the Lord, we begin to want what He wants and love what He loves. His desires become our desires. That doesn’t mean we forget about our work or abandon the goals we’ve set for our families. Some goals might fade–but more often, God reshapes them. He arranges our priorities so they reflect His heart. And in that process, our homes become places where discipleship takes root in everyday life.
Have a great week leading your family!
