Welcome to the February edition of Parent-Driven Discussions – Love One Another!
February is often filled with reminders about love. We see hearts, cards, and special gifts everywhere we go. Side-note: I feel like we’re buying Valentine’s Day cards for our kids’ classmates earlier and earlier each year. Has anybody else noticed that? End Side-note 🙂 But the kind of love Jesus talks about is deeper than kind words or special moments. It is a love that shows up in real life, especially when it is inconvenient or uncomfortable.
As parents, we want our kids to know that loving others is not just something we talk about. It is something we practice because we belong to Jesus.
This Parent-Driven Discussion will help you talk with your kids about what it means to love the way Jesus loves.
Bible Focus
John 13:34-35 (ESV)
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Devotional Thoughts
When Jesus tells His disciples to love one another, He gives them a new way to live.
Jesus says, “Just as I have loved you.” That means our love is shaped by His love for us. Jesus loved first. He loved patiently. He loved when people failed. He loved when it cost Him something.
This is important for our kids to understand. Loving others is not about showing kindness only when it is easy or when we feel like it. It’s about choosing to treat people the way Jesus has cared for us.
At home, loving one another often looks very ordinary. It looks like forgiving a sibling. It looks like sharing without being asked. It looks like speaking kindly when we are frustrated. It looks like listening instead of reacting.
Jesus also says that our love shows others that we belong to Him. Our kids are learning what following Jesus looks like by watching how we love the people closest to us.
Before our children learn how to love others well, they need to be reminded of how deeply they are loved by Jesus.
